  1. New floor

January 5, 2012 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

Yesterday the carpet in our main living area got removed and they have started to polish the concrete. It is a dusty job. Our carpet was very old and deteriorated, so the owners have opted for the polished concrete option. So the process is to Paul up the carpet and smooth edge. Then polish all the concrete and fill any holes and cracks. They then give it one more quick polish and put a clear coat of sealant on top. It will look pretty cool as far as I’m concerned. Just very dusty at present.

  2. Long weekend

December 25, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

Yes, how quickly time passes. Ten days since my last entry on my blog. As the silly season hits us (Christmas and New Year), work got extremely busy. I’ve been working a lot, so having a break is a welcome change. Yesterday, we pretty much had a nice cruizy day with a bit of a sleep in and a leisurely breakfast. We still had our meeting to go to, but that is never a burden.

Today we’ll be cleaning out the garage in preparation for Dad’s visit. We are going to do it up into a bit of a bedroom, so that we can all be comfortable. When not in use as a bedroom, it can be a study and a coffee room. Ryan Pedersen has given us some sliding glass doors, which we’ll be installing just behind the garage roller door. That way we can open up the roller door and have a nice bit of light come in, keep an eye on the kids playing out the front, while still having a closed room.

Cam and Sean have been busy boys in our backyard. They decided amongst themselves that, while our fence made out of bamboo reed was ok, it could do with improvement, so they concreted the poles in and have started putting up a proper fence. It’s great! It gives a nice level of privacy in the backyard. It was quite a nice surprise to see their hard work when arriving home.

January is going to be another busy month. We have our CO visit, and Reilly will be going to the US with the Penfolds for the intense program at the Son-Rise centre.

  3. Successful trivia nite — visitor gone

December 16, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

After some hiccups the Trivia nite turned out a great success. So much so that we have no hit the target for the Penfolds to be able to go to the US this January. It’ll continue to be an ongoing costly exercise, but at least this hurdle has been overcome.

    The board went for $2200!

We had a bit of a hiccup. About an hour and a half before we were to start, the laptop on which I had the Trivia program setup (to run on the projector screen), decided to just die altogether. It just went blank and wouldn’t power up anymore. So, I very quickly drove home, installed the software on a different pc, re-type the questions (which I thankfully had printed the night before), redid the audio clips and drove back to Bangalow, to have it all set up and running just in time. Phew, that was a close one.

Aunty Shane left yesterday. We enjoyed having her here. I would’ve liked to have spent a bit more time with her, but unfortunately was very busy at work. But we managed to catch up and have some nice talks. I think she enjoyed her stay and had a good rest also. She devoured a few books while here and slept in a few mornings.

  4. Visitor and Reilly’s planning skills put to the test.

December 8, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

yes we have been busy and even Reilly’s planning skills were put to the test this week. tomorrow nite we have the Trivia Nite for Cove. And today Aunty Shane will be coming to visit for 8 days.…. or so Reilly thought.

In fact, she arrived yesterday! Reilly received a message at about 12.30 saying that she had arrived at the Gold Coast airport. Whoops. So I jumped in the van and went and picked her up.

    All is good!

We have a spot to book tickets for the Trivia Night.

  6. Sand everywhere

November 29, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

So, I’ve been back at work for a week now, and tomorrow things should be returning to some sort of normality. John flew back from Sydney this afternoon and will be back at work again tomorrow.

But, it has not all been work and no play. This afternoon, after work, we went to the beach for a while. It has been a really hot day here and even at 6pm, when we went to the beach, the sun was out and the water was beautiful.

I’m having to force myself to enjoy the beach more. It is funny how sometimes you build up a mental block in your mind. When I think of going to the beach, I think.……“sand everywhere.” Yes okay, I understand that his may seem like stating the obvious, but I mean, you bring your sunnies down, sand all in the little hinges etc. try and have a drink or something to eat without sand getting on it.…. Love the extra crunch on that salad sandwich… Oh wait, it’s sand.… And then there is the sand that travels to every nook and cranny of your body.

So, do I dislike the beach? The funny thing is, no I don’t. Once I get to the beach, I love it. I enjoy swimming in the ocean, I enjoy spending time at the beach. I really do!

So what is the point? Well, in my case, I found the point to be that we sometimes tend to have reservations about doing certain things in life. Some of these reservations may be valid. Let’s face it, sand in your jocks is never a good thing. But, sometimes, we allow minor things to become major reservations, which then prevent us from doing anything.

In my example of the beach, what do we have. We have beautiful weather, miles and miles of ocean, and a beautiful clean beach. And we have sand. Sand which is nice and soft, sand which allows us to build sandcastles with our kids, sand which allows us to walk on a nice soft surface, and yes, sand that gets in everything.

But.… Sand washes off just as easily. One quick wash with a garden hose or under a shower, and not only have you enjoyed the beach, but a refreshing shower to top it all off. Now we are clean and refreshed.

Lesson learned. Focus on, and enjoy the good things. Don’t allow minor inconveniences or ‘negatives’ to stop you from enjoying the beautiful things in creation.

Profound meditative stuff or a lot of gassbagging? That one is for you to decide.

  7. Back at work.

November 23, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

After arriving home, with the KH pc to be repaired, there was another surprise waiting. John (my employer), rang me to let me know he was flying out to Sydney as it looked like his mother would not have much longer to live. So this morning, it was back into the full swing of things.

John’s mother did indeed pass away this morning. I am very happy that at least John was able to be there by her side as she passed away.

Our thoughts are with him and his family.

  8. Our brief but enjoyable holiday

November 22, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

We just got home from a 6 day holiday in Yamba. We rented out a house with Cam, Kellie and their boys, Sean, and us three. It was very enjoyable. We couldn’t have asked for better accommodation or weather.

We went to different beaches everyday, enjoyed the surf and probably gained a few pounds!

I also did a lot of reading and studying. Got the elders book, so went through that a few times and did all my research for the elders school coming up in February. It was great to have the time to do all that studying, knowing that I wasn’t going to have to interrupt it to go to work or sort out anything. I could just focus on my study. It was great!

Oh, and we also took Lilly fishing a couple of times. Caught a flathead and a whiting.

As soon as we hit the road to come back, the first call came in. The sound system in the hall was struck by lightning. Yay! Lennox is having their meeting tonite. So on the way back we stopped by at the hall, removed the broken bits and got the sound working. Now it’s time to get back to work both at my job and in the congregation.

But, at least, I’ve had the chance to wind down and relax for a few days. And I’m definitely feeling the better for it. It was an overdue break, but the best one I’ve had in a long time.

  9. One day assembly

November 13, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

We had our one day assembly yesterday. For the past few assemblies we have had to drive to Brisbane. Always tricky because we are in NSW and Brissie is QLD, so that means that during the spring/summer, they are an hour behind us.

It’s a bit of a drive to get to Brissie, but it is definitely worth it. In the past, we used to go to Lismore and have our assemblies at the community center there, which was not very comfortable to say the least. The assembly hall in Brisbane is a purpose built one, which means much comfortable seating and good sound.

It was an enjoyable day. But I have to say that I’m pretty exhausted today. We have been extremely busy over the past few weeks, with even our weekends taken up by things like the construction of the carpark at our hall and then the markets last week. So as a result, today is our first day ‘off’ in weeks.

But, this Wednesday, we’ll be driving to Yamba for a short holiday. I’m very much looking forward to a bit of a break.

  10. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

November 9, 2011 by Sebastiaan Scholtens

Yes indeed, I have abstained from posting anything on my blog for a couple of weeks. One does not want to overload one’s readers with too much trivial information.

To be honest, it has been a very busy period. John (my boss), has had to fly to Sydney twice in the last two weeks, as his mother is very ill and probably doesn’t have much longer to live. This has left me in charge of running the business for the better part of two weeks. Good fun indeed.….…hmm.

Then of course there was the market day preparation for the Sunday market stall (more on that on Reilly’s blog).

At our kingdom hall the new parking lot was put in last week (some 47 truck loads of concrete!).

Of and this weekend we drive to Brisbane for our assembly.

Anyway, I decided I needed a bit of pampering after these busy weeks and asked Charlotte to give me a haircut. It has made me a new man.
